party girls illustration

On my 25th birthday, the girls and I went partying all night. We hopped clubs and danced like we weren’t wearing heels. We started drinking at 9, stopped at midnight to eat greasy biryani at a midnight buffet, drank some more, got in a brawl with the police, stopped at a sandwich joint at 4 am and finally came back home at 5. We then posed in the lawn outside my home and took a photo. We looked a bit off but we looked good. We even posted that picture on Facebook.

Cut to 2015; partying “all night” ends at 2 pm, with one weepy sad drunk, one feeling sick, one throwing up on every free surface and one becoming suicidal-y depressed. We took a photo, but we had to delete it right there and then.

Live fast, die young. That was my motto, until now, when it’s too late to die young. I would live fast, but it gives me acid reflux.

How am I literally the only unfit person at my yoga class? Here I am sinking deeper into my pool of sweat with my big belly and all, while all around me is a sea of stretched out rubber bands.

Sometimes I think people who really need to work out often don’t because they feel fat shamed into staying home and eating their emotions. The giant mirrors, the itty bitty outfits, the unsmiling women staring at your love handles – it’s all intimidating and it makes you feel like a bit of a failure.

If you’ve ever felt like that, just chin up and go for it. You don’t owe anybody perfection.

I’ll admit though, it wouldn’t hurt if someone cracked a smile once in a while. But I guess, peeps are just being super introspective while decidedly checking out their ass in the mirror.

Hipsters, Coffee and The Grounds of Alexandria

A friend who lives in Sydney told us we must visit “The Grounds” for brunch. So we did.

Built on a repurposed industrial compound, The Grounds of Alexandria is a eatery, bakery, produce market, flower shop and farm — all rolled into one mega cafe.

They have a small farm section with hens and goats, which means adorable human babies petting adorable goat babies — hours of fun for me. You can then choose to sit out at the pergola in their magical garden with flowers,  fountains, and fairy lights. Or you could sit in the overcrowded main section and order a breakfast board (average) and artisanal coffee (absolutely divine). Across the cafe is Garlands, a flower shop selling just-cut flowers, some of which come in strange psychedelic colors. A few steps behind that is a produce stall, where you can buy fresh handmade pasta, cheese, meats and some very expensive Himalayan rock salt. Bare, minimal industrial space covered with lots of green and flowers – it’s all very beautiful.

We went on a week day and the place was full to the gills with very stylish people and a lot of hipsters. I am never clear on this cultural phenomenon being Indian and all, but guessing by the number of flowing kimonos, geometric jewelry and wide brimmed hats, I might be right.

There’s Nowhere to Grow But Up

2015

It still feels like 1999 was yesterday. I finished high school and everyone was really concerned that the Y2K virus was going to end the world.

When I was in Calcutta for the holidays, my friends and I visited a bar we used to go to. Then someone said, remember? smoking was allowed here.

Of course I acted like I had no recollection of that time, seeing as it made me feel ancient. My other friends fell a bit silent too, as if trying hard to remember.

Then someone finally said it, we are THAT old?? It was a question, but no one answered it. We then ate our body weight in food and left.

A Sock Story

Socks

I am going home for Christmas and New Year, which means I am packing for winter. I need just two pairs of clean socks, but no.

Despite my best efforts, my socks have gone through what I assume is a bad break-up (‘cuz one of them has left forever), when I wasn’t looking. I try so hard to make them stay friends. I wash them together, I even tie them together. But I guess my socks are secretly loners.

So I have decided to just wear them singly, ‘cuz if they want to be alone so badly, who am I to say anything.

bread

Excuse me, were you saying something about your low carb, low fat, low fun diet for the three extra pounds on your thighs? Sorry, I was too busy cradling my precious loaf of banana bread like a new born baby.

lola

It’s insane how similar toddlers and dogs can be. Very often, when in the presence of wee babies, I compare their silliness to my dog, Lola. Sometimes people understand and a lot of times they take offense because I am comparing their child to a “dog”.

But the thing is, I feel like I birthed my puppy (Yes, I am aware of how weird this sounds). She is my little furry animal baby. Does anyone else feel like they gave birth to their puppy? Do you get what I am saying?

“Nazar pheeki, chashma colorful
Duniya dikhey orangey, wonderful”

My vision is poor, but my glasses are colorful
So the whole world looks orangey, wonderful.

Smile if you feel like this. 🙂
